Wesley and Nina along with their two daughters, Lorina and Amanda, are wonderful local hosts at Jumasume. Wesley is gone for 7 months of the year picking apples in New Zealand. Nina is a sweet woman who grew up in the neighboring village. She will happily give you walking tours of the villages, introduce you to locals, teach your about their edible landscaping, prepare a local meal for you, show you how they cook, take you to their garden or whatever it is that interests you. We of course try to reciprocate her excellent friendship, education, and generosity. They are a wonderful family to connect with if you get the opportunity, their English is good and their connection in the community appears to be strong. If you go, tell them that Courage and Shannon on the boat Lil’ Explorers say hello! They only have a small store in the town, so rice, flour, cooking oil, ramen noodles, or any of the processed and packaged foods are welcome as are fresh caught fish. Do be aware that most Vanuatu traditional villages struggle with lice and parasitic intestinal worms.
