Anchorage Category: Anchorage
Luganville is the second largest town in Vanuatu. It has a medical center and grocery stores. As with anchoring off any city, be more alert and wary about pulling up your dinghy at night and locking up if you aren’t onboard. You can anchor just off the town. There is a shallow reef relatively close to the dinghy dock, so be aware as you enter and if it’s low tide, you must go around it.
The dinghy dock has security and if you walk through Santos Hardware, you are right on the Main Street. Taxis can drop you off on the dirt road behind Santos Hardware right at the dinghy dock. Supplies are relatively limited, you can feed a family, but variety isn’t guaranteed. The fresh fruit market does have great deals, cheaper than Vila.
There is one Bred Bank and one ANZ in town. Fuel can be purchased and jerry jugged back to the boat.
Interent, both TVL and Digicel are present.
You won’t want to swim here, but can take a short trip to Aore if you want more nature activities. There are nice parks along the water with playgrounds and even public bathrooms for $0.20 (acceptable, but not the nicest).
For $120 you can catch a van (or car, same price no matter how many people) for an entire day. They will drive you up to Million Dollar Point, the Blue Hole, and Port Olry, so if you don’t plan to cruise Santos, a road trip could cover much of it in a day. Be prepared to pay for each of those 3 stops though, the $120 is just for the taxi.
