We are a World School Family and have been all of our lives. We are Courage and Shannon Winter and we have 6 children. Our approach to travel, homeschooling, parenting, finances and life have all been dynamic over time.
Courage grew up World Schooling as the fourth of ten children. They lived on a boat their father built and traveled from the west coast of the US to Panama, then through the Panama Canal and up the east coast.
This was back in the day of sextants and noon position, no GPS, internet, cell phones or satellite phones. It was a hard, but good life and they are a very close family now. Their mother was educated as a teacher and taught them, but much of their learning was experiential. As adults, all of the siblings have been quite successful in college and careers. Courage became a mechanical engineer and worked in management. When Intrepid was born, he wanted more time at home with his family and chose to become a real estate broker and appraiser to work from home and allow more flexibility to travel and make his own schedule.
Shannon grew up in a more traditional setting. She has one older sibling, lived in a house at the end of a cul-de-sac for the first 18 years of her life, and attended public school, where she received a good education. She yearned for travel and adventure. At 18, she left for Mammoth, CA to become a ski instructor and ski patrol. She did community college in the evenings in Mammoth and went on to University of Colorado, Denver for a Bachelor’s of Biology with a Chemistry minor. She spent the summer after college as a rafting guide, then attended medical school at University of Southern CA followed by an Emergency Medicine residency. After having 6 children and working full time for about 10 years after residency, it was easy for Courage to talk her into being home with the kids more, working less and traveling.
Cassidy is 19 years old and traveled with the family until 18 years of age. She is now back in California attending community college. She is 2 years in with straight A’s and a very mature perspective. She plans to work on getting a degree, some savings, some investments, and setting up a way that she can incorporate travel into her adult life.
Intrepid Explorer is 12 and a very active young man climbing, swimming, and exploring. He sometimes struggles with asthma and during his down time he enjoys Minecraft, Terraria, and anything computer related.
Integrity Vision is 10 and our co-captain. He has driven the boat himself between anchorages while Courage was onshore (Mom was watching, but not working). He’s a great builder, designer, and entrepreneur with lots of ideas.
Innocence Barbara is 9 (middle in the photo). She is quite durable and tolerant with two older brothers and an active lifestyle, but she’s very much a caretaker and enjoys little children to care for and every baby animal she can get her hands on. She also enjoys arts and crafts and dress up.
Vitality Veritas is 7 and a go getter. She’s mischievous and animated with no fear. She loves the baby animals and dress up, but also digging in the sand, running and playing.
Valiant Honor is 5 and a sweet little man with a lot of ideas. He can tell a story for an hour and probably not even take a breath!! He considers himself an equal contender and one of the big guys, without a doubt. And more often than not, he keeps up and holds his own.
